HRL

 Home Reading Log (HRL)
Procedures

All students are to read any grade-level appropriate chapter book for 20-30 minutes each night, and complete the new HRL. We have provided a sheet with the format for the students. A new log will be provided every Thursday when students hand in their homework. Students must log how many pages they read each night on the new HRL. On Wednesday evening, after reading, students are to write a response choosing one of the topics below. The response should be based on the reading that was completed at home.

Your response should show that you spent time thinking about what you read. Although a certain length is not required, your response should fully address the topic chosen. The HRL is due every Thursday morning.

Topic Choices:
1.     Tell about your favorite part in the story. Were your predictions correct? Were you surprised by the outcome? What do you predict will happen next?
2.    Tell about the characters in the story. Describe who they are, what they look like, how they feel, and how they act. How could they affect the story?
3.    Tell about the setting of the story (when and where it happens). Would you like to visit that place? Describe why or why not.
4.    Does the story remind you of something you have read or experienced before? Write about your connection to the story using a lot of details.
5.    Identify the genre of your book. Explain the features that helped you decide which one it is.

Note:This assignment is not meant to be stressful. We just want students to think about what they read each night, and give their thoughts on the book. The topic choices above include important reading strategies, which we discuss on a daily basis. Our goal is not to make reading a chore, but to encourage thoughtful discussion in class.
***If your child finishes more than one book in one week, no problem! They just need to choose which book they want to respond to.
