Building Bridges

Their hypothesis was correct!!!
h
The students are predicting if the bridge, that is built with
sticks, will hold more pennies.
This group thinks it will work better if they tape
the straws to the books.

This group decided to tape the straws together in the middle.
Students are trying to build 2 bridges.
One bridge is made from straws, the
other is made from popsicle sticks.

Students predict how many pennies each bridge can hold.

This bridge could not hold any pennies.

Reading Goal Reminder

Please remember that each child should be reading at least 20 minutes each night. By September 25th, students should have at least four books logged in their planner and signed by a parent. The reading log can be found on page 10 of the student planner.

Field Trip Reminder

Dear Parents,

This is a reminder that field trip money is due on October 1st. Students will have the opportunity to go rock climbing at an indoor facility, and to Tree Hill Nature Center. We are very excited about both field trips and would love for all of our students to attend.

The total amount for each student is $18.00. If you have any questions at all, please write us a note or give us a call. Permission slips will be sent home in the next few weeks for those students who can attend. Thank you!!!

Classroom Updates for Parents

Dear Parents,

All procedures are discussed, modeled, and explained in class before students go home. Because it is the beginning of the year, we will update you on our classroom routines to help communicate our expectations. Thank you for your continued support!

Reading Rituals and Routines:
HRL Homework- Many students have found the original assignment confusing, therefore we have updated the HRL assignment to help our students. Please click on the HRL tab for detailed information. This assignment is due each Thursday.

*Students should be reading at least one book a week to keep on track with the reading goal.

Library/Books:
We have provided a list of books on our website to help support parents with choices at the Public Library, however students are not limited to these books. We want students to choose from a variety of genres, and pick books they are interested in.

We are in the process of assessing each child and their independent reading levels. Ms. Bronfman and I try to take the class to the school library each Monday to choose up to two books. The books they choose should take about a week to complete if they are reading each night. We also monitor that the students are choosing appropriate books for their independent reading levels. *Please note that the school library will not be open to the students again until after the Book Fair. We do have a classroom library for students.

Benchmark Testing:
Starting Monday, 9/10 students will begin Benchmark Testing. Please refer to the following schedule:
Monday:       Reading Benchmark Test (will take the place of Reader's Workshop)
Tuesday:      Reading Benchmark Test (will take the place of Reader's Workshop)
Wednesday: Math Benchmark Test (will take the place of Math Workshop)
Friday:          Math Benchmark Test (will take the place of Math Workshop)

Vocabulary
Because of testing, this week's vocabulary test will be given on Tuesday. Words will be reviewed again on Monday.

Training
Monday- Mrs. Myers will be out in the morning. She is attending a training with Ms. Kornblum, and will return in the afternoon.

Thursday- All third grade teachers will be attending a district training session. Substitutes are assigned and will provide meaningful lessons and work on this day.
